Canik Prime Radian
Canik Prime Radian

It looks like The Canik Guide will be expanding again with the release of the 3rd variant of the Canik Prime and 18th Canik I've reviewed! The Prime Radian brings collaboration with Radian including a few tweaks to the already-great Prime model.

What Is It? The Canik Prime Radian expands on the Prime line of large micro compacts with the inclusion of a backstrap, magazine well, barrel, and muzzle weight/compensator from Radian.

Who's it For? Large micro compacts like the Canik METE MC9LS and subsequent Prime models offer a whole-hand grip and 17+1 capacity in a pistol that is still slim enough for carry and a shorter barrel for carry comfort. Personally I would not carry a pistol with ports or a compensator, but that's a matter of personal choice. If you feel like I do the Canik Prime NC is an excellent option. For everyone else the Prime Radian may just be the flattest-shooting of large micro compacts on the market today, and the capacity means it also makes for a great range gun.

The Radian difference comes in the form of an enhanced magazine well that I found to make for a great grip on the pistol. Additionally a single backstrap of Radian's design is included (the other two are standard Canik Prime). The most visually obvious difference is the Radian Ramjet and Afterburner barrel and compensator combination.

Despite close proximity to me in Oregon, Radian has been shy to submit to a GBGuns review and so this is my first encounter with their products. The Ramjet and Afterburner barrel and compensator/muzzle weight combination is visually striking and does seem to make a difference in the shooting experience. The trick here is not just the ported barrel and weight of a muzzle device, but also the enlarged expansion chambers afforded by that muzzle device to enhance compensation and braking effect. Additionally, just like we saw on the Canik TTI Combat, Canik has shortened the slide a touch; reducing reciprocating mass which also reduces felt recoil and muzzle rise. In the Canik Prime Showdown we explored the real difference by comparing all four Canik pistols of this size class against one another in a quick drill performed by two different shooters.

I attempted to remove the compensator after the first range session to weigh slides and the muzzle device, but it was carbon locked on; an issue the internet reports as being common with Radian's Ramjet and Afterburner combo. That's not a problem for basic use and maintenance, but somthing to be aware of.

Canik has long been known for providing great value in their kit. The Prime Radian is no exception.

Before filming the comparison with the MC9 LS, Prime, and Prime NC we of course needed to set a baseline for the Prime Radian and it wouldn't be a true baseline if the Prime Radian wasn't put through the same eset of experiences as all the other reviews. That's where the GBGuns Range Protocol comes in:

  • Cold Shots: Truly our first shots through the gun.

  • Full Magazine +1: Suprisingly some modern guns still struggle with this. It's a test of how much play is in the magazine as well as how the slide cycles with pressure. This is also when I do my best to learn the trigger.

  • What's For Dinner™: A test to see what ammunition the gun will eat. Does the gun feed the round from slide lock, will it cycle and feed another round of the same type, does the slide lock to the rear on empty, and is there any notable point of impact change with different loads.

For this gun the following ammunition was used:

  • Sights & Trigger Control: on a 6" spinner target at a distance of 12-ish yards. We got this from Titan Great Outdoors and use it to gauge how learnable the trigger is and usable the sights are for forced, timed, precise shots.

  • Practical Accuracy: Five shots from a distance of seven yards at a one inch target. This isn't so much about printing a tight group as it is a culmination of the shooting experience and time for to collect thoughts prior to making a conclusion.

  • After Shots: Final impressions and reflections from the range session.

Canik Prime Radian Shooting Impressions Video

On the Range we experienced an odd "crunchy trigger" sensation during initial break in that I think must have been some flashing in the frame as it didn't happen when the trigger was pulled perfectly straight rearward, only if there was a slight angle to the pull. Later, when we filmed the comparison test we didn't feel the crunch at all, and since then it's disappeared.

The "Prime Grey" and bronze colorway is one option for the Canik Prime Radian. The other option is all black.

Overall the Canik Prime Radian is the nicest-shooting of the Prime line yet. Next we'll mount a dot on it, likely something from our OSight Guide and run some more drills with it to see just how fast we can make this "little" gun go.

The magazine well of the Canik Prime Radian greatly enhances leverage for large-handed shooters.
