I got into shooting avidly back in 2011 when I moved back to the US and got to enjoy the civil rights which I had been sent overseas to protect. Weekend trips to the woods with my friends, weekend 3-Gun matches, and eventually reviewing firearms on YouTube and for magazines and websites incrimentally stepped up my ammunition consumption.

It wasn't long before paying regular retail wasn't within budget and I began ordering in bulk online; excited at the lower cost per round only to be slammed with the shipping costs pushing that cost per round right back up to what local retailers wanted. Sometimes I'd find a deal, sometimes I wouldn't, but the momentary shock to my personal budget of buying cases at a time wasn't fun eaither.

In 2016 I discovered AmmoSquared and have been a customer ever since. What makes AmmoSquared has evolved over the years to something some folks may not fully grasp at first glance, but it's something I enjoy regularly and so I'll do my best to break it down.

What Is It? AmmoSquared is not a regular ammunition retailer. Instead AmmoSquared operates a bit more like a bank, even giving we consumers the opportunity to profit from ammunition sale spikes and depressions (more on this later). Think of AmmoSquared as a savings account for ammunition. Your monthly budget is spent as you direct, but instead of stressing about keeping it stored in a dry cool place and your significant other harassing you about how much space it takes up the folks at AmmoSquared manage your stockpile until you request it be shipped.

Why Do I Like It? By setting a monthly budget I was able to get better financial control over my amunition spends. AmmoSquared doesn't answer the need for a by-name load, but for general range ammunition and occassional hollow points when I'm not concerned about which exact load it is AmmoSquared is perfect. I can stock up cases of ammunition slowly over time instead of shock-loading my budget, and I don't have to worry about being told to put it in the damp garage.

What Is It Not? AmmoSquared is not where you order two boxes of a specific load and expect them to be delivered the same week.

How Does it Work? Your AmmoSquared account starts with you setting a monthly budget. I neively began at $50 a month before I realized I needed a lot more than that. From that budget you decide what percentage you want allocated to what type of ammunition. Prices fluctuate with the market and are declared so there are no surprises.

Caliber, projectile type, and even grade (range vs premium for example) for most of America's popular calibers. At the time this was written 75 possible combinations sourced from more than 85 manufacturers were available.

You Set a Trigger for when you want your ammunition shipped. That trigger can be based on time, quantity, or value. If you enjoy socking away a stockpile with a predictable budget and letting someone else take care of keeping it fresh you can have no trigger and just let the ammunition pile up until you decide it's time to ship.

What are Prices Like? I've always described AmmoSquared's prices as more than you'd pay for bulk, but likely less than you'd pay at a local retailers. The company itself explains the prices are based on the current median price and they are transparent about their data.

What was that about benefiting from market fluctuation? You own physical rounds with AmmoSquared, but until they've shipped, they can be sold back at the current market rate. One of the loads I had been slowly stockpiling was subsonic .300 Blackout. When I started building that up those subsonic rounds went for around $1/round, but I stopped using the round long before the first time that caliber fell out of popularity. I simply ignored that stockpile for a while as I didn't need it shipped. When .300 Blackout experienced a revival subsonic rounds were suddenly over $2/round and I had plenty in my AmoSquared inventory which I was able to sell back to the company at the new price for credits; effectively doubling the money I had invested.

As you can see from this shot of my own invetory, most of what I've been trickling into inventory has lost value since the time that I paid for it, but there are a couple that have gained value. I'm not advocating for attempting to get rich holding ammunition, but have personally gained from sitting on a pile of unshipped ammunition that I later decided I didn't need.

If you are one who likes to plan, including for times when you had no plan, I highly recommend AmmoSquared as a reliable source of ammunition.
