No particular reason, and when I was 3-gunning I even added witness windows to my AK magazines. You do have to be cuatious though when doing it though to of course strip the magazines first so you don't risk damaging the spring or follower and then second to make sure it's a clean hole that won't cause the spring or follower to snag.
