I've been through a lot of different containers on the channel over the years and have found them to be much like the guns we store in them: there's something for everyone, and not true universal solution.
The Hornady Treklite Lock Box XXL certainly follows that rule. This lock box is affordable and light weight, but does not seem to be as secure as other options out there which understandably cost and weigh more.

So Who's it for? I see this lock box as ideal for someone who needs to fly with a pair of firearms. The locks are TSA compliant (which is sometimes required, sometimes not deisrable), a weight of just 3.7lbs means it's less likely to cause an overweight fee from the airline, and the security is adequate for a flight. By adequate I mean that no lock or safe is impenetrable, and if a baggage handle wanted to take your gun they're just as likely to take the whole piece of luggage if they haven't bought the $15 TSA keys already commonly available on the internet.

The TrekLikte Lock Box XXL might also find a good home in a car or closet when a layer of security is needed for practical reasons, but anyone looking to get to your gun was going to anyways; lock boxes like these only add deterence and light resistance.

The Lock Box XXL is advertised as being able to contain legal documents or two 1911s and indeed comfortably accepted the Bersa B1911 and Sig 1911X-Full Emperor Scorpion, but in 2026 how about some double stack 1911s with optics?

Equipped with optics, the BUL Armory TAC COMP and EAA Girsan Witness 2311 Match are both 5" guns and still fit inside with some careful angling. Thicker firearms may require replacing the included foam with a soft cloth or thinner foam.

The locks are easily reprogrammed to change the combination to whatever 4-digit you desire. Security experts though would warn against the hasps engaging in the same direction as it makes for a weak corner.

Overall I see this lock box as exaclty what it claims to be; a lock box. It's not meant to replace a safe, nor will it, however it does provide a layer of security for firearms or other sensitive items while being transportable and very affordable. With prices like these it's an easy choice for simple peace of mind when flying, or to tuck something away.
